As the All Progressives Congress, APC, Lagos State chapter, began the
process for the 2015 general elections, the national leader of the
party and former Governor of the state, Bola Tinubu, has declared that
the party is indivisible, despite all efforts from different quarters to
divide the party. He however, assured all members and intending members
that the party would follow due process to the letter in the selection
of candidates for various offices.
Tinubu, who gave the assurance while addressing members at a
stakeholders’ meeting at the weekend, held at the state Secretariat of
APC, in Ikeja, urged all prospective and old members to register in
accordance with the party’s constitution, saying that only registered
members would get the party’s identity cards and be recognized as such.
Speaking shortly after the guidelines for party membership and
registration were read to the large crowd by a senior officer of the
party, Tinubu, said: “We love peace in this state and I can be at peace
wherever you send me. We want peace at various senatorial districts,
local governments and ward levels. Let there be peace. We will not allow
those who are trying to divide us to succeed. We are indivisible. We
are five and six; twin brothers and sisters and that is the only way we
can achieve victory.
“If you are contesting and start running a caucus and campaign
organization, once that campaign is over, you must dissolve into the
party like a cube of sugar.
“We want to show example with Lagos State, because I am still sending
some of you to other South West states. We want to show maturity,
leadership and good quality; we want to show that we know what we are
doing and we will bring the party to victory. In this party, we will
remain as one in victory and it must start from now.”
Tinubu warned against using the registration to create division among
members. “There is discipline in APC. If you are caught promoting
division, you will be suspended pending trial. APC is my party. I do not
have a group. We cannot encourage grouping or caucuses in APC. If you
want to contest for any office, the procedure is in the party
constitution.
“You cannot claim to be an APC member until you register. I appeal to
you all to formalise your membership of our great party. The
registration starts on February 5 and will last for six days. It starts
from 10am to 6pm daily,” he stated.
He assured that all arrangements had been made to ensure a hitch-free
registration, saying: “The registration forms are ready. They are
pre-numbered and have security codes. Nobody can hijack or hoard the
forms because they will serve no purpose.”
Tinubu also urged members to register at the polling units where
they voted last, urging those who have relocated to register in their
new locations as they will be adequately captured.

Justin Bieber - Justin Bieber's Manager Hands Him Ultimatum
Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun has reportedly issued him an ultimatum to curb his bad behaviour or he's ''done'' with the singer.
The 19-year-old pop star - who was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and drag racing in the early hours of Thursday morning (23.01.14) - has been warned to curb his bad behaviour by Scooter Braun, who discovered him years ago.
A source told Access Hollywood: ''Scooter Braun and others in that camp have issued Justin an ultimatum.
''You'll hear people today say, 'Oh, he's a young guy, he's making mistakes, he's a young kid.' Scooter and his team, they're all past that. They're past that point with Justin.
''Scooter has said to him, 'You've gotta go get help, or I'm done. I'm done with you.' ''
Meanwhile, Scooter has publicly acknowledged the troubling situation, claiming he ''loves'' Justin and will be there for him.
He wrote on Twitter: ''@justinbieber love you and i will act in the manner of someone who truly cares. that is all I have to say. thanks for all those concerned.
''Been a long day. Bottom line is we are defined by how we handle adversity. Be there when it counts. Love fully in good times and bad. (sic)''
Owen Wilson Welcomes Baby Boy With Personal Trainer Caroline Lindqvist
Owen
Wilson and personal trainer Caroline Lindqvist welcomed their baby boy
into the word this past Thursday, but the actor still has no plans to
settle down with her.
Owen Wilson welcomed his second child, a baby boy, into the world this past Thursday (Jan 30th).The 45 year-old was present while personal trainer Caroline Lindqvist gave birth.
This is the pair's first child together but second son of Wilson's who is already a father to 3 year-old Ford from a previous relationship.
The pregnancy news first surfaced this past October, and at the time Lindqvist was still married, but separated, to plastic surgeon Ritu Chopra.
The Swedish fitness fanatic stated at the time that she would not pursue a relationship with Wilson until her divorce was finalised or after she gave birth.
"She is just happy that Owen is helping her out any way that he can," a source told E!News at the time, adding that Wilson was "very supportive" when she broke the news. "They have an amicable relationship and [care about] what's best for their unborn child."
"They get together for dinner and see each other fairly often," the source continued. "Owen has shown a desire to be involved with ultrasounds and doctor appointments. He's definitely invested in their unborn child."
Wilson allegedly met Lindqvist when he separated from Katie Hudson and subsequent suicide attempt in 2007, she was hired to be his personal trainer and as their friendship blossomed it evolved into "regular sex romps."
Although Wilson was reportedly happy about the pregnancy, he has no intentions of starting a relationship with Caroline, a decision which the personal trainer isn't happy with.
Congratulations to the pair on their new baby boy!
Owen Wilson is now a father of two
Marc Baylis: Hottest Foreign Actor in a Nigerian Movie
We got a live to life so stay alive think of tomorrow and forget the past. By: FRANCIS TAWIAH -->D |
Marc is not famous in Nigeria, because he has only acted in one Nigerian movie and it is not the common Nollywood home video seen on Mnet's Africa Magic channel or the Nollywood flicks pirated and sold on the streets. Changing Faces is one the very few Nigerian movies rated highly as outstanding features made for the cinema.
Marc's thrilling role as the young white Architecture whiz kid Dale married to a Nigerian woman showed him as a better actor than Van Vicker and Majid Michel and stood him in class of his own as a world class romantic actor, even though it was reported that he was particularly uncomfortable with the “ass-taping” scenes of the erotic role in steamy sex scenes with the young reporter, Lola he met at the Architectural conference in a beautiful hill top hotel. He was quite convincing in his portrayal of how a born again married man fell for the seductress Lola who lured him into her bed on the last night of the conference and his life was never the same again.
Nigeria offers $2m to support post-conflict African countries
Addis Ababa – Nigeria will provide two million dollars to support reconstruction and development in African countries emerging from conflicts, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, the Minister of State 11, Foreign Affairs, said.
Mohammed made the announcement on Saturday in Addis Ababa at the inaugural Africa Solidarity Conference (ASF) aimed at mobilising support from within Africa for countries emerging from conflicts.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to support such countries in capacity building and manpower assistance through its Technical Aids Corps (TAC) scheme.
“Today the scheme is present in more than 50 countries, coordinating the activities of thousands of volunteers in teaching, medicine, law, engineering and research.
“The UN is presently in talks with Nigeria to adopt the scheme as a model for post conflict reconstruction.
“Nigeria hereby offers the TAC platform to AU for partnership in manpower development for post conflict countries,’’ he said.
The minister urged post-conflict African countries to take advantage of the Nigeria Technical Cooperation Fund with the African Development Bank (AfDB).
He pledged Nigeria’s continued commitment to conflict prevention in the region and added that presently Nigeria was contributing 50 per cent of the troops in the ECOWAS mission in Guinea Bissau.
“In Mali we have committed more than 50 million dollars to the stability of that country in addition to the lives of two young Nigerian pilots who died while on a reconnaissance mission.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Algeria pledged a donation of one million dollars at the conference while Gambia announced a donation of 50,000 dollars.
Rwanda and Botswana pledged capacity in support of the initiative, promoted by South Africa.
In her remarks, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the AU Commission chairperson, said the initiative had laid the ground for a paradigm shift from dependence on foreign assistance to African self-reliance.
“It is also a unique opportunity for generating additional “out of the box’’ ideas for addressing challenges and promoting intra-African solutions to the many complex issues facing countries recovering from conflict.’’
Dlamini-Zuma appealed to member states of AU to make concrete commitment, saying “no pledging offer should be considered too small.’’
Also speaking, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa commended the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) for organising the conference.
He also thanked the teams that conducted a study that offered an understanding into the priority needs of countries emerging from conflicts.
Zuma noted that the initiative provided an opportunity for African states to renew commitment to sustainable peace, security and development.
“This initiative allows us to manage our affairs independently and it is only when we have a sense of ownership that we can address our challenges as a continent,’’ he said.
Representative of post-conflict countries, including Liberia, CAR, Sudan, South Sudan, Cote D’ Ivoire, Mali shared their immediate needs to the conference.
In their presentations, they listed key priority areas of need to include infrastructure, education, economic reconstruction, health and security sector reform. (NAN)

No Bra Release 'Candy' Lp Out Feb 10th 2014
No Bra Release 'Candy' Lp Out Feb 10th 2014
No Bra Release 'Candy' Lp Out Feb 10th 2014
New York's Address label marks its first release with No Bra's new album 'Candy', out Feb 10th, with lead track 'Magic C***sucking Fairy'.
With a predilection for polymaths and provocateurs, Address will focus on what's happening in downtown NYC, within the realms of both music and art, their mission being to give carte blanche to artists to make what they see without limitation.
The potty-mouthed poetry of Susanne Oberbeck's No Bra is first up. Blocky, beat-driven, messthetics-y no wave and dance, it's fueled by the burning desire to smash kyriarchy and turn gender on its head.
Speak-singing monotone mantras topless from behind waist-length hair, there's the bile-fueled love story of 'Date With The Devil', the wry observational wit of 'Super Subway Comedian' (Suicide cover) and the plainspoken Englishness of 'Minger' - "standing outside the supermarket at 6am trying to blag a fag off someone but no one will talk to you", just to name a few.
This is John Waters-style humour, all brashness and bad taste, and it's been visually nailed by cult filmmaker's Bruce LaBruce's poker-hot album cover.
Forming No Bra whilst living in East London, Oberbeck has since moved to New York, where she recorded part of the album with NYC based musicians. She runs a night in NYC called Gay Vinyl, toured the US with Savages and in December completed a residency at East London's Vogue Fabrics.
The video to "Date with the Devil", directed by Ursula Mann, is expected out on February 17th.

Transfer news: Chelsea the big spenders as Premier League teams spend £130m in January
Of the 56 signings by Premier League clubs
in the window, 20 were completed on the final day, with the biggest
spending coming from west London as Chelsea and Fulham both paid £12m
for a player.
Chelsea signed Kurt Zouma from Saint-Etienne, where the defender will spend the rest of the season on loan, while Fulham broke their transfer record to bring in Kostas Mitroglou from Olympiakos.
Crystal Palace sealed all of their deals on deadline day as Wayne
Hennessey, Jason Puncheon, Scott Dann, Thomas Ince and Joe Ledley all
made last-minute moves to south London.
Arsenal did their only business of the window on Friday with a loan deal for Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom as Emmanuel Frimpong moved to Barnsley on a permanent deal.
Meanwhile, Dimitar Berbatov's colourful eight years in the Premier League came to an end as he swapped Fulham's relegation battle for Monaco's title bid in Ligue 1, but manager Rene Meulensteen responded by adding loan signings Lewis Holtby and John Heitinga to the Mitroglou deal.
Dani Osvaldo's ill-fated five-month stay at Southampton is over at least for now, with the Saints' club-record signing joining Juventus on loan with a view to a permanent move.
Meanwhile, the long-anticipated loan deal for Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha to Cardiff finally went through.
Chelsea were involved in four of the top five signings in January.
They sold Juan Mata to Manchester United for £37.1m - a club record for United, beating the £30.75m deal for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 - while spending £21m to bring Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge from Benfica.
Liverpool also missed out on Mohamed Salah, who chose Chelsea ahead of Brendan Rodgers' side in a £15m deal from Basel.
Hull City broke their transfer record twice in the window, first in signing Nikica Jelavic from Everton and then again in snapping up Shane Long from West Brom for a fee rising to £7m.
Chelsea were by far the biggest spenders, with an outlay of nearly £48m, but only nine clubs actually spent any money, with Manchester City, Tottenham, Southampton and Liverpool doing no business at all.
Fulham and West Ham were the most prolific, each bringing in seven players, with the Cottagers signing five on deadline day alone.

Liverpool appear to have missed out on the signing of Yevhen Konoplyanka after failing to agree a deal with Dnipro.
Liverpool appear to have missed out on the signing of Yevhen Konoplyanka after failing to agree a deal with Dnipro.
Chief executive Ian Ayre had flown out to Ukraine to continue negotiations about a deal, thought to be in the region of £15m, but the move looks to have fallen apart in the final minutes of transfer deadline day.
Konoplyanka is believed to have undergone a medical, but unconfirmed reports suggest the deal fell through because Dnipro president Ihor Kolomoyskyi refused to sign the necessary paperwork - despite the £15m release clause being met.
Premier League rivals Spurs were also interested in Konoplyanka, but he will now remain with Dnipro.
The medical was completed in Ukraine as Konoplyanka, who scored
against England at Wembley during World Cup qualifying, does not
currently have a visa.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had said earlier on Friday: "There's obviously an interest in the player.
"We'll see how it evolves. It is obviously a little complicated but the staff that are over there have done brilliant work in terms of giving us every chance to get a player."
Konoplyanka also claimed to be 'excited' by the possibility of joining Liverpool - but talk of a move failed to materialise as the transfer window closed at 11pm on Friday.
The failure to sign Konoplyanka means Liverpool have failed to sign the winger that Rodgers wanted to bolster his side's push for a Champions League place - they also lost out to Chelsea in the race to sign Mohamed Salah.
Rodgers was also quoted as saying on the club's official website: "If you look at the position we're in with 15 games to go, we have shown consistently that we have the squad to compete.
"The benefit of the second half of the season is that there is still a lot of development left in a lot of our young players."

Insecurity: Negotiate with B/Haram or crush them now — Gov Kwankwaso tells FG
•Says Jonathan should offer amnesty to insurgents as Yar’Adua did to N/D militants
By SONI DANIEL , Regional Editor, North
kwakwansoWorried by the wanton destruction of lives and property by insurgents in the North-Eastern flank of Nigeria, Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has asked the Federal Government to either negotiate with the perpetrators of the violence or take concrete and urgent steps to contain them.
Kwankwaso, who made the call in an interview, pointed out that there was urgent need to put an end to the raging violence in the North-East and stabilise the region’s economic base so that the crisis did not spread to other parts of the country.
According to the governor, it is no longer fashionable for the Federal Government to claim to be tackling the insurgence in the region while more and more people and property were being destroyed daily.
Kwankwaso said, “I think that this is the right time for the President to come out and do the right think. The right thing is for the Commander-in-Chief to come out sincerely and either negotiate or fight what is happening in the North East and other parts of Northern Nigeria.
“I think the days of pretence should be over. I am surprised that many of those we spoke to said that many people were not serious in fighting the menace that is happening in the North-East and other parts of the north because some of them are saying that ‘na dem dem’.
And I don’t think that that approach will help. If you are a governor, every square inch in your state should be your own and not owned by ‘dem dem’. This issue of security, economy and education is very important.
“I remember that at a time when there was a serious security challenge in the Niger Delta, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua came up with a special amnesty programme whereby those men and women who were involved in the acts had to lay down their arms and ammunition for a better programme.
“I think the Federal Government should come up with something for the North-East. I am from the North-West and we are poor but the North-East is poorer and something needs to be done to arrest the worsening situation in the region.
The issue is not allocating N2 billion in the budget for the North-East but taking the necessary steps backed by the required political will to end the violence in the region,” the governor admonished.

Jonathan laying foundation for a new Nigeria – Maku
Abuja - The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, says President Goodluck Jonathan is laying the foundation for a new Nigeria anchored on equality and social justice.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the minister’s Press Secretary, Mr Joseph Mutah.
The statement said Maku made the remark in Lokoja, Kogi, at a special church service to mark 100 years of Nigeria’s amalgamation.
“Through sound policies and commitment to the nation, the President is developing all parts of the country simultaneously.
“In the last three years, the President has founded thirteen universities, 10 of them are located in northern Nigeria and only three in the south.
“That is what we call justice, we believe a new generation must rise and give this nation leadership’’, the Minister was quoted as saying.
It stated that the federal government was constructing a seaport in Lokoja to convey vessels to the newly constructed Baro seaport following the dredging of River Niger.
The statement said the development would enhance inland waterways transportation that would open up the northern part of the country for more commercial activities.
It stated that train services which broke down before the advent of the present administration had been revived with the movement of trains from Lagos to Kano.
The statement also said that the minister preached forgiveness among the various ethnic and religious groups as a conscious effort to promote brotherhood and strengthen the bond of unity in the country.
It assured Nigerians that the nation was being reinvented based on sound principles and virtues that would bring about prosperity and development through the firm belief in God.
The statement said that the minister flayed proponents of the division of Nigeria and noted that Nigeria would surmount its challenges and endure perpetually.
“From today onward, Nigeria will begin to witness new peace; from today onward, those who doubt the unity of this country, will be converted like Paul on the road to Damascus.
“From today onward, God will touch the heart of those who use religion to divide, to destroy rather than to build”, Maku was quoted as saying.
It also said that Kogi Governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, thanked the congregation for seeking a new path for Nigeria through God.
It said that he was optimistic that God would always provide wisdom, guidance and knowledge for the country to overcome its challenges.
It stated that the founder of Throne Room Ministry, organisers of the special prayer session, Apostle Emmanuel Kure, said the service was to strengthen the unity among the diverse groups in the country.
“I advise Nigerians to appreciate the virtues and values in living together as a united nation. I urge politicians to be cautious with their utterances on peace and unity of the country.’’
It said that prayers were offered for peace to reign and abort any plan to cause confusion and division in the country. (NAN)

Man to die by hanging for stabbing wife to death
The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has upheld the death sentence handed a man, Edet Okon, who was found guilty of the offence of murder by a Lagos State High Court and was sentenced to death by hanging, for stabbing his wife to death with a spoon at night.
A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh ordered that Okon be hanged for killing his wife.
The appellant had appealed the judgement, arguing that the lower court erred in law when it dismissed his plea of insanity.
But in a unanimous judgement, the Court of Appeal held that Appeal No. CA/L/553/10 lacked merit and dismissed it.
Justice Ikyegh, who delivered the leading judgement, said Mrs. Okon’s blood was crying for vengeance and her killer husband should “reap what he has sown; blood for blood.”
Okon had claimed at the lower court that he was insane at the time he stabbed his wife to death and two witnesses called by the defence had given evidence that there were cases of insanity in the family of the appellant.
However the court rejected the evidence adduced in support of Okon’s claim, convicted him of murder and ordered that he should die by hanging.
Aggrieved, Okon took his defence of insanity to the Court of Appeal, urging it to upturn the judgement of the lower court.
But in their judgement, the Appeal Court justices said the High Court was right in rejecting the plea of insanity.
The court further held that the burden of proving insanity rested on the appellant. The appellant, the court added, failed to discharge the burden on him to prove that he was insane at the time of committing the offence.

How South Africans worked against Nigeria
Fireworks and jubilant scenes marked the end of the thrilling semi final match of the 2014 African Nations Championship between Ghana and Nigeria in Bloemfontein Wednesday night. Officials In attendance were 12, 560 spectators and almost three quarters of that number cheered endlessly for Ghana.
Either by arrangement or sheer happenstance, the majority of Ghana fans were stationed behind the goal post manned by Nigeria goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim. They sang noisily, made catcalls, beat their drums and blew their trumpets all in a way to distract the Nigerian captain.
The penalty shootout took place at that particular goal post in front of Ghana fans. Their catcalls and senseless roars behind the keeper, perhaps, had an impact in the performance of the Super Eagles players in the penalty shootout.
It must be noted that most of those fans that rooted for Ghana Black Stars are South Africans. Ghana played all their matches, up to the semifinal duel against Nigeria in Bloemfontein. They formed a large support base. This was enhanced by the fact that some of the locals were still pained for the fact that The Super Eagles eliminated the Bafana Bafana in the group stage. Most of South Africans have not forgiven the Nigerian team for that. So the game against Ghana provided an avenue for payback time.
The booed every move by the Super Eagles and cheered the Ghanaians even when they missed the ball.
Ten man Ghana team was galvanized by the hospitality of their host community and that clearly gave them a psychological edge. Ghana coach, Maxwel Konadu admitted after the match that the supporters were his twelfth player. “Support from the fans played a major role in our progress. They did everything for us and I thank them for helping us against Nigeria,” he said, adding, I will attribute today’s victory to them.”

Why I have not remarried -Victor Essiet
Victor Essiet of The Mandators fame, who just
returned to the country after sojourning in the United States for over
two decades now speaks on why he has not married again after the death
of his former wife, Peggy. He also talks about his upcoming album, his
American experience and his plans to revive the reggae music in Nigeria
What’s your latest album, ‘Freedom Train’ all about?
You
must know that the track is an introduction of the upcoming album which
is 15-tracks. The message of redemption is still strong today. There is
no prosperity for the suffering masses and their ordeals are on the
increase. Freedom is our right, it should be demanded for; it is not
earned. We are not going to beg for our freedom.
But
it is a collective effort of the masses; the masses should come together
and demand for their freedom. It is a message that we are bringing as
usual that since the world is not getting better, we cannot relent on
our efforts to mount pressure on those oppressing us.
I
am working with independent records companies such as Mystic Records
California and PP Records based in New York to release this major work.
We are still working on this album.
This is one
single that is dropping very soon. I will be shooting a video of this
very track in Los Angeles before we embark on a world tour. We are
planning to release the first single in February while the second
single will be released in April. The album itself will be released in
June.
Were you surprised that no Nigerian artiste was invited to perform at Mandela’s funeral?
I
was not surprised because this is Africa, and in Africa we have a lot
of wicked people. They do not believe in doing the right thing. Yes, we
stood for our sister country during the apartheid era, and one had
expected South African leaders to use Mandela’s funeral to honour
Nigeria.
Until Africa finds the right people who would put things in perspective, things would remain this way.
What is the essence of this event?
Do
you know that Nigerians keep asking me why I left Nigeria for America? I
went for a radio and television interview session, and the listeners
were calling to find out what I’m doing currently and why I travelled
out of the country.
I realised that I am so much
loved and the things I did while I was in Nigeria and which I took for
granted were appreciated by the masses. Yes, I sojourned in America for
a long time and while I was there, I got blessed by God.
I
didn’t make much name in America like I did in Nigeria. But I gained
in terms of monetary compensation much more than I did in my own
country. The big names in Africa didn’t buy my cassettes and video
cassettes. The masses bought my video cassettes and listened to my
songs. The masses made me who I am today.
I got to
America and I didn’t have to introduce myself because I was seen on TV,
the papers, recordings and so much more. The Americans were elated by
the way Africans applauded my arts.
So, I got their
attention and made something for myself because of my popularity in
Africa. As you know, Nigeria is dying because the truth is suppressed. I
am using this medium to tell all my contemporaries that I am back home
and ready to support everybody.
Is it a way of reviving reggae music in Nigeria?
Yes.
Reggae is about truth and justice and the reggae artistes need to earn a
good living singing their songs. I have just signed a franchise in
America known as ‘Reggae meets Africa’. Reggae in Africa has to be
exported. I happened to be the only reggae artiste from Africa known in
America, and this is not supposed to be so.
Honour is
never given to whom it is due. But I have won an award in America as
‘Best New Entertainer’ by International Reggae World music. If I have
won the award, that means I have what it takes to stand the test of
time. My coming back is to show them that I appreciate them and wants to
carry them along in whatever I am doing.
When I
left Nigeria for America, I didn’t relocate because I don’t like my
country. But I left for America because I got to go to somewhere else
and do something differently. I am not using this medium to try to get
back into the Nigerian music scene because I am ever present in the
scene.
I am going to continuously offer quality
music. I am looking at the situation where every good reggae artiste in
Africa would be known by the world because of the message they are
conveying to the masses.
For instance, Rhymzo is a
very good reggae artiste, but he hasn’t done much for himself in
monetary value. How can he survive this way?
There
are other good reggae artistes wallowing in poverty because of the truth
and justice in their songs. Meanwhile, the government is sponsoring
artistes doing meaningless songs because these musicians are not
condemning their wicked attitudes toward the masses.
I
cannot fight this battle alone. That’s the reason for this invasion. We
are not only talking about reggae artistes in Nigeria, but all my
brothers in Africa. We want a situation where we can take a reggae
artiste from Nigeria to South Africa and bring in Ghanaian reggae
artiste to Nigeria.
You were known to be a social crusader. Is it that you have changed since you got to the United States?
This
is the mistake we make. Back in the days, I made my first album; it
didn’t make it because it was not promoted very well. I made another
album, it didn’t also fly. I produced the two albums while I was still
in college in Lagos.
The third album which was Crisis contained
songs such as ‘Rise to the Top’, ‘Inflation’, ‘System’, ‘Redemption’
which canvassed for the emancipation of the blacks in South Africa and
the song, ‘I love You’, which preached love and unity in Africa
became a major hit and automatically turned the music industry around in
this country.
There are ghettos in America;
joblessness, sufferings but it is not in the same magnitude that we have
here. Wherever I am, I represent the voiceless people, the downtrodden
people.
I am not going to be shooting a music video
depicting some kind of things that is not part of me. I am a sufferer
from time immemorial. As long as there are suffering people, people
that are not having enough to eat then, I’m a sufferer.
We
are not alright until my African brothers or sisters are doing well.
Again, I said there are 15 songs in the album. We will be shooting the
video in Nigeria as well as other parts of Africa.
How have you been able to maintain your dread locks?
It has been with me almost all my life. I handle my dreadlocks just as you wash or comb your hair.
Have you re-married?
Not
at all. I am just being focused on my career. It is very difficult to
make it on the international scene. It demands a lot of commitments.
So, I have been putting a lot of energies into my music to be able to
achieve what I have achieved internationally. I’m still a single father.
I have a son and his name is Essien. I love him so much.
Don’t you think you belong to the old school, and hip hop has taken over in Nigeria?
I
just want to correct another thing. I lived in the US and I would want
somebody to tell me where music is highly sophisticated in the world? I
want somebody to tell me where the centre of entertainment is located in
the world today?
When you tell me that, then I am
going to tell you that hip-hop that we are talking about today is not
the hip-hop we know internationally.
If I belong to the past, King
Sunny Ade was in the past, Chief Ebenezar Obey, Late Sonny Okosun,
Fela, Victor Olaiya et al were there before I was born. When I came into the scene, I had a place in the Nigerian music industry. I am strong and resolved in the things that I do. I can do anything. As a matter of fact, I am not boasting, I can do what every other musician is doing. But they cannot do what I do.
I was there before so many musicians that are here today just like many where there before me. They made ways for all of us like I made ways for others. Others came to make way for us, they did not come to destroy or drive away other people.
I have been doing music for a long time now and I have been growing from strength to strength even when I am not here. I am here joining hands with the young people who we have paved the way for .
Myself, Majek Fashek, Ras Kimono, Onyeka Onwenu, Evi Edna, late Xtian Essien, among many others were in the forefront and are still doing it. Let’s face the reality. The reality is that old school is the real music. All the songs I have released are evergreen.
What is going on in the country today? It’s the same thing I was singing against in the 1980s. We are yet to have another Moses who would lead us to the promised land. What we have today is hypocrisy.
It pains me because I went through this and only God helped me to be able to be sitting here. Not that I am fully back but I am going to be here doing the things that we need to do to move our country forward.
I don’t have problem with what kind of music we have in the country today. But the problem is within us as a people, let us promote whatever we have but gear towards the emancipation of the real people.
Govt shutdown:Why Jonathan will not intervene in Rivers crisis — Ben Obi
SPECIAL Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi, in this interview spoke on why the president may not intervene in the crisis ravaging Rivers State as demanded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders while directing APC federal legislators.
He also spoke on how the president is handling pressures to declare his 2015 political ambition, allegations that the president is not fighting corruption and the leadership tussles between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC in the National Assembly. Excerpts:
ON the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC 2015 timetable
First of all, they have a constitutional responsibility to take care of elections; it is that responsibility they have adhered to. For me, it is part of the transformation agenda that those who are given responsibilities to perform do so without let or hindrance. That is what the Professor Attahiru Jega-led INEC has done.
Nobody was expecting it. If anybody was saying that they were under some influence that person is wrong in his presumption.
It is the independent nature of the various organizations under this administration that is coming to play. We must thank the president for making sure that these organizations have a free atmosphere to function.
So, when is President Goodluck Jonathan declaring whether or not to run?
I want Nigerians to understand one thing. I have been on the side of the opposition for very long. Now, I am in the executive, current leadership.
Path of governance
President Jonathan appealed to Nigerians and said he would not discuss politics until 2014. Despite all the pressure mounted on him by the opposition to draw him into politics much earlier than 2014, he resisted it; he continued on the path of governance and maintained that he would say something in 2014.
Now we are in 2014, now INEC has spoken, we do expect that with all of these, I am sure he will sit down with his kitchen cabinet and look at the pros and cons, what his administration has done and then take a position clearly on what his next line of action will be.
I want say, as somebody who has been deeply involved in the management of political parties; a political party will only sponsor a candidate, whose achievements they are proud of. So, when I see people talking about who the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is going to sponsor or not, I feel sorry for them because they don’t understand how political parties are run. I cannot tell the APC that because I had been associated with most of them one way or the other that A or B is a better candidate. I can’t do that.
And I expect that they too will not try to put themselves in a situation where they will be dictating to the PDP. Their business is to go and wait for whoever it pleases the PDP to produce.
In every climate and political understanding that I know of, particularly, when the constitution is on his side, they concede the first, the right of refusal to seek re-election to the incumbent.
The constitution is on the side of President Jonathan. His achievements speak for him.
If you feel offended or aggrieved, he has put out a mid-term report, cataloguing his entire achievements. I am still waiting to see a critical objection and rejection of that document rather than people just shooting in the dark.
He has put down his achievements in black and white. Take them one-by-one and dismantle or dislodge them but that has not been the case.
So, as far as I am concerned, I serve a president who has made a tremendous impact in the lives of Nigerians judging particularly from where he took off. What was the situation when he came on board and what is the situation today?
How soon will the President meet with his kitchen cabinet over the issue?
Like I said he will meet with his kitchen cabinet, they will study the INEC guidelines and timetable and decide: what do we do? Where do we go from here? Nigerians will be adequately informed at the appropriate time.
As far as I am concerned, they (president and his kitchen cabinet) still have some two to three months to really concentrate on governance and that is the Jonathan philosophy.
His New Year message was very clear: ‘Nigerians will enjoy a better 2014,’ which means there are certain things he will want to put up that will make a difference. Let’s complete that process before we go into the political event. Let’s create the atmosphere for a better Nigerian environment.
On allegations that the government influenced INEC to put the presidential election first to create a bandwagon effect in favour of the PDP
Go back to the past INEC elections and draw your analogy from there. There is nothing INEC will do today that people will not say it is doing it in favour of the president in power.
But those of us who are part of the government in power are really a bit perturbed the way things were done without consultations. Consultations I mean here is the council of state and various bodies. They are performing their responsibility as a body under the constitution. For anybody to think that all they are doing is in our interest is unfortunate.
On leadership tussle in the House of Representatives between APC and PDP with APC claiming majority over PDP
We have legislators from APGA and Labour Party. Have you taken their numerical strength? Where do they stand? APC has 172 and PDP 171 members, if you add APGA and Labour, who then constitutes the majority? It is always better we do stocktaking before we come to the public domain.
I must commend the Speaker for the matured manner he handled the issue that day. Both camps, APC and PDP poured encomiums on him.
APC tied its directive to shutdown government to the resolution of the crisis in Rivers State…
Again it is a vindication of the position of the President. If the president dabbles into the issue of Rivers, he should be ready to dabble into the issues of the 36 states plus one – the Federal Capital Territory.
Having appointed people to take charge of the various departments of government –the Inspector General of Police, Director, Department of State Services, etc, it is when the matter overwhelm these people that there can now be a communication to the government.
Like many people talk about corruption, have we had complaints from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or Independent Corrupt Practices and related offences Commission (ICPC) that they are under-funded? Have they said there is this intervention from the government that is making us not perform? As far as the presidency is concerned, the right people have been put in place and they have been doing their assignments. Until they fail, there is no point to intervene. I was listening to Amaechi, he said he spoke to the IG, ‘I am going to lead this Save Rivers Rally myself.’ And he thanked the IG because the IG sent men to make sure that they are protected. Some of these things are due to gap in communication.
On Speaker Aminu Tambuwal’s comment that President Jonathan is not fighting corruption the way he should given issues around Aviation Minister, Princes Stella Oduah and Director General of the Stock Exchange Commission (SEC), MS Arunma Oteh?
On Oteh, I am a member of the Presidential team, I do not know nor have I heard of how the president found a way to fund SEC.
International politics
But I do know that Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating minister of the Economy, a highly respected international figure, who but for international politics would have been president of the World Bank and the President of the World Bank pays her absolute respect, set up a committee and that committee vindicated Oteh.
The legislature came up with its own issue. Ordinarily what needs to be done here is to look for solutions. It is not my duty to start educating the legislature on what to do. I just want to make sure, as somebody who has served on both sides, I can tell you there is always a way out of such a dilemma.
That is a way that must be looked into at resolving the issue so that both sides can sleep with their eyes closed.
On the issue of Speaker Tambuwal talking about body language, when I was in the Senate a couple of people talked to me about the Third Term agenda. I was the person who coordinated the project. I was not the chairman. Senator Idris Kuta of blessed memory was the chairman.
A lot of offers were made to me on how we should allow the third project sail through. The speaker talked about body language, when you are in the legislature, the truth of the matter is that you see permanently a challenge from the executive. And the more challenge you put across to the executive the more assured you are of your position.
Purview of the executive
I say to my colleagues in the executive, the young man (speaker) is managing 360 legislators from different political parties, background and interest, etc.
So he has a duty to navigate the storms and as long as whatever he says cannot be used against him, all well and good. Talking about Stella Oduah, the president did what he should do. Within the purview of the executive, he set up a committee immediately to investigate Stella Oduah.
Let me tell you something and I say this with all seriousness and experience as a politician, 35 years experience: this woman has done what no minister of Aviation had done. She has done so much in improving our aviation sector. I don’t see how on earth she will bring herself to a level of deliberately engaging in unexpected and unbelievable scam.
A lot of Nigerians across the country have commended her. I, as a son of Anambra State where she comes from, I am exceedingly very proud of her. I am happy. Whatever it is, a committee has been set up. By the time a decision is taken, it will be clear that the president will not go out of his way to shield anybody that is indicted. The President Jonathan that I have seen and known in the last two and a half years will not shield you if you are found wanting President Jonathan is not the typical Nigerian politician, who lies and promises you what he would not do. He is not the aggressive type of person. He is somebody who means well for this country. He is committed to seeing a true Nigerian nation unfold. That is why he is all-accommodating. No president has been bashed by the media as him.
Divine message
I keep telling our people, the way you make your bed so you lie on it. If we ridicule our president that is the way people outside will see us. It is not about Jonathan. Beyond all of these, there is a divine message in Jonathan’s appearance on the political scene. It will be better if all of us join hands to make this country better.
Jonathan’s critics say he is too slow compared to rulers like Obasanjo…
I was a victim of the Obasanjo era. All those who say this now were saying a different thing when Obasanjo was in power. Today, President Jonathan is consulting. For every action he takes, he consults. Every action he had taken that needed to be reversed was reversed. Let us give him his dues.
On comments that the national conference is now threatened with discordant tunes trailing the report of the Senator Femi Okurounmu committee
I don’t agree. The national confab is not threatened. The President set up a committee, to come up with a template. The committee has submitted its report and people are reacting. Naturally, that is what it should be.
The committee is not all-knowing, it is not omnipotent. People are reacting from the various zones of the country, that is what it should be so that by the time the report is finally collated and the way we are going to hold the confab is decided, everybody will feel included and involved. I see the president’s position as purely defined and straightforward.
He also spoke on how the president is handling pressures to declare his 2015 political ambition, allegations that the president is not fighting corruption and the leadership tussles between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC in the National Assembly. Excerpts:

American Apparel's 62-year-old lingerie model

Keen to show that sexy has no expiration date, American Apparel has cast 62-year-old Jacky O'Shaughnessy to model its lingerie
BY Olivia Bergin |
31 January 2014
READ: American Apparel in trouble again with advertising watchdogs
Posting a picture of 62-year-old Jacky O'Shaughnessy sporting a lace bandeau bra and kickers (and nothing else except for a slick of red lipstick) on Instagram and Facebook, the caption reads: "Sexy has no expiration date. Jacky in Floral Lace Lingerie".
Feedback on the social networking sites ranged from anger and abhorrence to comments made by those who are perhaps more mindful that one day they will be the same age as O'Shaughnessy.
"Now she looks amazing. Honestly, not a flaw. Such a great figure and beautiful, long hair. Her skin looks healthy as does her entire body. And she doesn't look 'too old' for those pieces" wrote one user.
O'Shaughnessy, who is not a professional model and was scouted on the off-chance by American Apparel in New York two years ago, starred in an 'Advanced Basics' campaigns for the brand in 2012 - but was fully clothed in the images. It is thought that the picture above was taken in 2012, but hasn't been used by the brand until now.
At the time she told Fashionista: "Marsha [the photographer] introduced me to American Apparel and all of a sudden I discovered clothes that are beautiful, affordable and actually fit. I don't need to alter anything. They're perfect for my lifestyle, I like to be comfortable. You could say American Apparel and I discovered each other. It's a new world."
There's no denying that O'Shaughnessy is striking, but perhaps it's actually the underwear chosen that isn't doing her justice.
Who could succeed Anna Wintour at US Vogue?
Who could succeed Anna Wintour at US Vogue?
As rumours that Sarah Jessica Parker will succeed Anna Wintour
at US Vogue are shot down, we ask: Who could step into Wintour's Manolo
Blahniks when the time comes?
Victoria Beckham: the chameleon
She's come a long way since her days as a Zig-a-zig-ah-ing Spice Girl and now sits firmly at the top of the international fashion tree. Who's to say she can't morph into a magazine editor next?
Anna Dello Russo: the exchange programme
Can you imagine Vogue in the hands of the woman that brought us 'Fashion Shower'. Wouldn't it be amazing? A stalwart fashion editor, Dello Russo certainly has the vision, even if it is a bit, umm, outrageous.
Victoria Beckham; Anna Dello Russo
Amy Astley: the safe choice
The editor-in-chief of Vogue's little-sister publication Teen Vogue, Amy Astley has worked with Wintour before when she was a beauty editor at Vogue. Well respected in fashion circles, Astley would be a very safe pair of hands to leave big Vogue in.
Natalie Massenet: the business guru
The founder of Net-A-Porter, Natalie Massanet is an omnipotent presence in British fashion as the chair of the BFC. However, she's US-born, used to be a fashion editor at Tatler and she's got Wintour's seal of approval. "Natalie's doing a very good job," said the editor-in-chief of Massenet's impact on London Fashion Week. "She's a very organised person and she's obviously having an impact on where the shows are located."
Amy Astley, Natalie Massenet
Eva Chen: the protegée
When Wintour became artistic director of Condé Nast she immediately bumped former beauty editor Eva Chen up to editor of Lucky, one of Conde Nast's US titles. Chen is very well known, and liked, in the industry meaning the top title at Vogue may well be hers one day.
Marc Jacobs: the curveball
Think about it. "He's opinionated and has some spare time now [that he's left Louis Vuitton]," says Lisa Armstrong, "also a brilliant stylist in addition to knowing what we all want to wear."
Eva Chen; Marc Jacobs
Tamara Mellon: the all-rounder
The Jimmy Choo co-founder has business savvy and a creative mind. Since setting up her eponymous label (in NYC, no less) she knows how to stand up to a boardroom of investors and get ideas off the ground. Plus she's glamorous, supremely well-connected and used to work at British Vogue.
Tonne Goodman: the internal hire
Surrounded by British-born counterparts at US Vogue, Goodman, the magazine's fashion director is like a fresh breath of Manhattan air. Styling tricky celebrities is her bread and butter, and no-one understands the demands of the high-earning American woman better than she.
Tamara Mellon; Tonne Goodman
Roger Federer: the sporty spice
OK, this suggestion is as likely as Andy Murray winning Wimbledon (oh… hang on) but the tennis supremo attends shows with Anna, while she cheers him on from the stands. He certainly knows how to wear a suit, and has probably learnt more than meets the eye from those fashion soirees the two love to hang out at.
John Galliano: the provocateur
A curveball perhaps but it's well known that Anna is a huge supporter of Galliano's. It was her that got him his first post-scandal job at Oscar de la Renta and what better way to bring him back to the top than to seat him in her big, shiny editor's office?
Roger Federer, John Galliano
Lena Dunham: the voice of a generation
Dunham is US Vogue's current flavour of the month, quite literally, as she appears on the February cover - the result of months of wooing by Wintour, apparently. Often dubbed 'the voice of her generation', she would certainly bring a new voice.
Lucy Yeomans: the Brit pick
Yeomans was appointed editor of Harper's Bazaar in the UK when she was just 29 years of age. Now masterminding the launch of Net-A-Porter.com's first print magazine, Porter, fashion journalism runs through her veins.
Lena Dunham, Lucy Yeomans
Meryl Streep: when life imitates art
As The Telegraph's fashion editor Lisa Armstrong comments: "If we're choosing editors based on the fact they once played writers, what about someone who actually played an er, editor - Meryl Streep?" A valid point we're sure you'll agree.
Stefano Tonchi: the editor's choice
Italian-born Tonchi would be a publisher's dream; he's the current editor of style bible W (also owned by Conde Nast) and has previously worked at Esquire, L'Uomo Vogue and edited T: The New York Times Style Magazine. He moves in similar circles to Wintour and would be editorially-focused.

Kwankwaso blow Jonathan: You’re not qualified to contest in 2015
‘…this amounts to a third term’
BY SONI DANIEL
As President Goodluck Jonathan prepares for his re-election next year, Kano State Governor, Dr. Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso has warned that Jonathan is not qualified to contest for presidency in 2015.
According to the governor, any attempt by Jonathan to run in the next poll will amount to a third term in office, which is not acceptable to most Nigerians.
Kwankwaso, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, yesterday, advised President Jonathan to take urgent steps to solve the raging insecurity challenges in the North-East and stabilise the Nigerian economy and take a bow from governance in 2015, when he would have attained the eight-year maximum limit stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.
The governor argued that contrary to the President’s position that his tenure started in 2011, the true position remains that he actually started serving as Nigeria’s President in 2007 and would have completed his eight years in 2015.
Describing any third term bid as a taboo, Kwankwaso pointed out that Jonathan and those urging him to run in 2015 could never justify such a move, which runs contrary to the clear provisions of the law.
The governor said: “Jonathan is not qualified to contest election again in 2015 going by the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. Third term is not acceptable to any part of Nigeria and the time limit stipulated must be respected by all Nigerians.
“I am sure Nigerians will kick against a third term whether by Jonathan or by any other person in this country.
Mr. President would have completed his eight years in office by 2015. He served as Vice President for two years, Acting President for two years and is doing another four years, which will terminate in 2015.
“But those advising the President are pretending that his tenure started in 2011. I saw them on television the other day trying to argue in that direction, but they can never be correct. I am not a lawyer, but I know that two plus four plus six can never be eight.

Controversial interview: Yes Mag reacts to Genevieve’s denial… “we have evidence”
Publishers of Yes Magazine have responded swiftly to Genevieve
Nnaji’s denial of an interview published in it’s soft sell, insisting
they have evidence.
Yes in a statement said “Like we professionally stated in our intro, it’s an old interview she had with our Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Azuh Arinze, years back at Oceanview Restaurants, Victoria Island, Lagos. He only stumbled on the tape again and reproduced it. Above all, we still have the tape of the interview as well as photographs taken on that day”
In the alleged exclusive interview, Genevieve Nnaji had been quoted as opening up on the kind of man she wants to spend the rest of her life with; an alleged relationship with Kunle Coker and plans to go back to school.
Hours after the story went viral, Genevieve had come on social medium twitter to refute the interview.

Appeal to your defecting colleagues to return, Mu`azu tells PDP Govs
The Peoples Democratic Party,(PDP), National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu
Mu`azu, on Wednesday appealed to governors on the party’s platform to
plead with their colleagues who defected to the opposition to return to
its fold.
He made the appeal in Abuja, when Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa-Ibom, led 13 PDP governors and two deputies on a congratulatory visit to the new chairman in his office.
“I want to passionately appeal to you not to relent in appealing to your colleagues that left the party, which is their home to an unknown destination, to please come back.
“The doors are still wide open and our house is big enough for all of them to come in.
“In a family like ours, there is bound to be conflict, but the ability to resolve it is what will stand us out.
“I therefore want to appeal to you, to please speak and appeal to them to come back and join hands with us to lift the party.
“As garrison commanders in your various states, appeal to our supporters and implore them to be patient with the party at this moment of its history.
“I have a very high hope and optimism that God will guide and see the party through this present challenges.
“Be patient at this moment of our history, you will see what you do not like and you will hear what you do not like.
“The rumour mongers around are working, but God will always guide us and surely shame our enemies,’’ the party chairman said.
Earlier, Gov. Akpabio, said that the governors were at the party headquarters to pledge their loyalty and commitment to the leadership of the party.
Akpabio, who is also the Chairman, PDP Governors Forum, expressed optimism that the new leadership under Mu`azu, would take the party to enviable height.
“We came here to congratulate you and the National Working Committee (NWC), we have seen that since you came on board, things have changed.
“Your emergence as national chairman is even welcomed by the opposition, because of your track records of performance as a former governor of Bauchi state.
“As a major founder and stakeholder of the party, we are sure that under your able leadership, the party can only wax stronger,’’ Akpabio said.
He pledged the commitment and support of PDP governors to the Mu`azu-led NWC and President Goodluck Jonathan.
He assured that the party would emerge victorious in 2015 general elections.
“We reassure you that the states are safe and that PDP will win 2015 election in all ramifications.’’ Akpabio said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that governors of Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, Cross River, Plateau, Kebbi, Bayelsa, Kogi, Abia and Gombe as well as the Acting Governor of Taraba were on the team that visited.
Jigawa governor Sule Lamido was, however, represented by his deputy.
NAN reports that five PDP governors had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the heat of the party`s crisis.
The former national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur resigned his position on Jan. 16, a situation that led to the emergence of Ma`azu as the new national chairman. (NAN)

Rivers:No one has accused Amaechi of not working,,, says Peterside
BY GBENGA OKE
Hon. Dakuku Peterside (APC, Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency, Rivers State) is Chairman House Committee on Petroleum, Downstream. In this interview with Vanguard, he spoke on the crisis rocking Rivers state, directive of APC leaders on government shutdown and the need for state police among others. Excerpts:
ON APC leaders’ directive to APC legislators to shut down government
The directive was given to stop the lawlessness in the country particularly in Rivers State. It is the right step in the right direction because this act of impunity must stop, it is not part of democratic culture. I fully support it and will join others to comply with the directive. The height of patriotism is to respect the law under which we are elected. If you don’t respect the law which is the foundation of a democratic society, then there is no basis for democracy itself. APC cannot appear to be helpless in the face of impunity.
On the crises ravaging Rivers State
The crises that have engulfed Rivers in recent times are condemnable and it should be condemned by all men of goodwill.
You need to understand the background to appreciate what the situation is. First, this Save Rivers Movement (SRM) is a non-governmental organisation.
Yes, police claimed they are sympathetic to APC, the group decided to convene a peaceful rally and notified the police seven days ahead but unfortunately on that day, police cordoned off the area when the people had gathered and started shooting tear gas at innocent and helpless citizens that are without arms.
At the end, Senator Magnus Abe was shot and several others were wounded. We must condemn that; the implication is that there is an affront on our constitutional drive, freedom of association, freedom of movement and freedom to carry out our legitimate political choices. This is an affront on those rights which are constitutionally guaranteed by the 1999 constitution, nothing in that constitution gave the police powers to deal with the public the way they so dealt with the group.
Nigerians must rise up to defend their rights, if they don’t, then these people will continue to trample on their rights especially the police. The police that are supposed to be the enforcer of our laws are now the principal law breaker, they are now the ones acting as if they are the laws to the land.
The second dimension is the fact that this has shown that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is intolerant of the opposition or alternative choices.
That again must be condemned because democracy is about people having choices, democracy is about the views of the majority while the minority must be able to express themselves as well.
The PDP controls the police and they are extremely intolerant of the opposition.
Finally, it is obvious that Rivers State has become a test case of what will likely happen in the days ahead especially the 2015 elections. The government at the centre is becoming more repressive, they are showing that they don’t respect the rules of engagement and if Nigerians do not stand up to defend their rights, then their votes will not count in the 2015 elections.
It is clear that the PDP will use the police to suppress Nigerians but I know that Nigerians are irrepressible, nobody can rig elections.
There are divergent views as to whether Sen Magnus Abe was actually shot or not. What do you have to say to that?
I was not actually on ground in Rivers as at the time of this development but I contacted a lot of people present when the development happened and they confirmed to me that police shot tear gas and rubber bullets and Senator Abe was rushed to Krisany Medical hospital in Port-Harcourt where he got immediate medical attention and I am told the hospital authorities said he should be flown to London to get better medical attention and I can confirm he is in London at present.
Given the nature of the Rivers crisis, do you support calls for state police?
I have been an unrepentant supporter of state police and I have my reason for it. I have said it severally that Nigeria is the only place in the world where unitary police exists. That is unfortunate and that explains the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in our policing. We need to understand that policing is by intelligence. Nobody can ignore the fact that intelligence is key and you can’t gather more intelligence than those people who are in that area, they know the individuals and their characters, they will know them better.
The secondary thing is the argument that it is subject to abuse, that again for me does not add up. Are you saying the current police controlled by the Federal Government is not subject to abuse? Anything that is not regulated is subject to abuse and that is why our position all along has been to put in place a regulative framework to check the police and policing institutions.
On the clash on interest between old and new members in the APC
APC in Rivers state is one big family that accommodates members of defunct new PDP, defunct CPC, ACN, ANPP and several other parties who believe in the progressive ideology, that human nature needs to make progress and we can’t make progress if we rise on pre conceived notion, our ideas must be dynamic.
Views of the majority
We can’t make progress if we are not driven by the people, we can’t make progress where the interest of the few will reign over the interest of the majority. We cannot make progress unless the views of the majority is accommodated. What has happened in Rivers State is everybody has a sense of accommodation and so I don’t foresee any crisis in Rivers APC.
Why didn’t some commissioners, advisers and staunch supporters of Governor Amaechi defect with him to APC?
We have different interest and motives for going into public service. Some are driven by sincere commitment to serve the people, others are driven by their personal interest. So all these factors determine the choices we make. The resignation we have had in Rivers, you need to look at the individuals who resigned and the reasons for their resignation, some may be well intended and some may be because they lack the moral courage to defend the good of their people.
There are different reasons why we have this resignations but none has said the government of Governor Rotimi Amaechi has not performed or his government is not working for the interest of Rivers people.
Nobody has said that. Some have said for personal reasons while some said they are not comfortable with APC, they prefer to stay back in PDP.

We knew Eagles lack penalty scoring skil... says Ghanian coach
Bloemfontein (South Africa) – ”We purposely stretched the match into penalty shootout because we knew that Nigeria did not know how to play penalty,” says Ghanian Coach, Maxwell Konadu.
Konadu made the statement at a post match interview on Wednesday after Black Stars defeated Super Eagles 4-1 on penalty to qualify for the final of the third African Nations Championships (CHAN) in South Africa.
Ghana will on Saturday at the final meet Libya which earlier defeated Zimbabwe 5-4 also on penalty shootout.
The full and extra times had ended goalless.
The two semi final matches were played on Wednesday at Free Town Stadium, Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Konadu said that although the Eagles were better tactically, the team lacked penalty shootout scoring skill.
According to him, the Eagles would have scored within the 90 minutes time of the match but his boys matched them one on one to stretch the match to the penalty shootout.
The forcefully contested match was marred with several yellow cards and one red card against the Stars with many players on each side seriously injured.
The Eagles, however, failed to utilise the 11 players against 10 for about 70 minutes to score during the match.
Coach Stephen Keshi said that he was looking forward for the third place match on Saturday against Zimbabwe.
The third and the final matches will be played at Cape Township Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa on Saturday. (NAN)

Youths on rampage over killing of hunter’s dog in Ilorin
Policeman injured, over 50 motorcycles burnt
BY DEMOLA AKINYEMI
ILORIN — The killing of a dog belonging to a hunter has caused a violent clash between two communities in Ilorin, the Kwara Stae capital, yesterday.
The development which prompted police’s intervention also led to a gun attack on a policeman who is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Over 50 motorcycles were destroyed in the fracas.
Vanguard reliably gathered that disagreement ensued between some residents of Abayawo area and hunters from Dada community in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state over a dog owned by a member of Dada community. The dog was reportedly killed by a car.
The said car is owned by a member of Abayawo, the rival community.
Residents of the area accused the police of burning over 50 motorcycles, raiding their houses, collected mobile phones and ate their soup.
Alhaji Baba Asileke, who spoke on behalf of Abayawo residents, accused the police of attacking residents who were not involved in the fracas. He urged the government to come to their aid.
“Our motorcycles were burnt and we don’t know why they resorted to attacking us when we were not the ones fighting. They entered our houses, collected phones belonging to our wives and even beat them up,” he said.
The ever-busy Abayawo-Okelele road was deserted when Vanguard visited the area. Scores of policemen were seen while no vehicular movement was allowed.
Pupils also rushed home while residents remained indoors.
Contacted, the state police spokesman, ASP Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the development, saying some arrests have been made.

US states consider old-fashioned executions
St Louis - With lethal-injection drugs in short supply and new
questions looming about their effectiveness, lawmakers in some death
penalty states are considering bringing back relics of a more gruesome
past: firing squads, electrocutions and gas chambers.
Most states abandoned those execution methods more than a generation ago in a bid to make capital punishment more palatable to the public and to a judicial system worried about inflicting cruel and unusual punishments that violate the Constitution.
But to some elected officials, the drug shortages and recent legal challenges are beginning to make lethal injection seem too vulnerable to complications.
"This isn't an attempt to time-warp back into the 1850s or the wild, wild West or anything like that," said Missouri state Representative Rick Brattin, who this month proposed making firing squads an option for executions.
"It's just that I foresee a problem, and I'm trying to come up with a solution that will be the most humane yet most economical for our state."
Brattin, a Republican, said questions about the injection drugs are sure to end up in court, delaying executions and forcing states to examine alternatives.
It's not fair, he said, for relatives of murder victims to wait years, even decades, to see justice served while lawmakers and judges debate execution methods.
Like Brattin, a Wyoming lawmaker this month offered a bill allowing the firing squad. Missouri's attorney general and a state lawmaker have raised the notion of rebuilding the state's gas chamber. And a Virginia lawmaker wants to make electrocution an option if lethal-injection drugs aren't available.
If adopted, those measures could return states to the more harrowing imagery of previous decades, when inmates were hanged, electrocuted or shot to death by marksmen.
States began moving to lethal injection in the 1980s in the belief that powerful sedatives and heart-stopping drugs would replace the violent spectacles with a more clinical affair while limiting, if not eliminating, an inmate's pain.
The total number of US executions has declined in recent years - from a peak of 98 in 1999 to 39 last year. Some states have turned away from the death penalty entirely.
Many have cases tied up in court. And those that carry on with executions find them increasingly difficult to conduct because of the scarcity of drugs and doubts about how well they work.
In recent years, European drug makers have stopped selling the lethal chemicals to prisons because they do not want their products used to kill.

Senators accuse Okonjo-Iweala of imposing W’Bank/IMF policies
The debate on the 2014 Appropriation
bill entered the second day in the Senate on Wednesday with some
Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress senators
describing the document as anti-people.
They chided the Minister of Finance,
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the way the bill was packaged and therefore
called for its review.
But others like Senators Odion Ugbesia
and Ayogu Eze argued that the bill was merely only a working
document, which could be subjected to alterations in the interest of the
masses.
Among the senators that picked holes
in the Appropriation bill were Smart Adeyemi, Abdul Ningi, Olusola
Adeyeye, Ganiyu Solomon, Kabiru Gaya and Gbenga Ashafa.
Adeyemi and Ningi, who lamented the high
recurrent expenditure as contained in the budget and the continued
depletion of the foreign reserves, accused Okonjo-Iweala of imposing
economic policies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank
on Nigeria.
Adeyemi said, “Okonjo-Iweala should be
told in clear terms that the economic policies of the IMF and the World
Bank cannot work in Nigeria.
“The policy must be reviewed. The IMF
and World Bank policies cannot work 100 per cent in Nigeria. We don’t
need IMF recommendations.
“What we need is what will impact on the
lives of Nigerians. We need to work on budget management and
concentrate on key areas such as power and other sectors of the
economy.”
When he took the floor, Ningi also
cautioned against Nigeria depending on the policies of the IMF, the
World Bank and other advanced economies of the world.
He suggested that Nigeria should
evolve an indigenous economic policy that would impact positively on
the economy and the citizenry.
The senator said there was the need for
the nation’s economic manager to note that while western economies were
collapsing, the ‘homegrown economies of India and China were waxing
stronger.
In his contribution, Adeyeye accused
the Finance minister of confusing Nigerians with ‘foreign economic
jargon’, which he called ‘Okonjonomics’.
He said that ‘Okonjonomics’ had no positive impact on “our domestic economy and lives of Nigerians.”
Solomon also advised the Executive arm of government to change any of its policies that had not been yielding results.
He said, “We should increase the ratio of capital expenditure to recurrent”.
Gaya and Ashafa lamented that the 76 per
cent recurrent expenditure and 24 per cent capital components of the
budget were lopsided, and therefore far from meeting the needs and
aspirations of the people.
Gaya noted that the distribution of the allocations in the budget was worrisome and unacceptable.
He said, “The Federal Government budget
is the reverse of the Rivers State budget. I wish the budget will be 74
per cent capital and 26 per cent recurrent.”
Ashafa pointed out that capital expenditure in the last three years had witnessed downward swing.
While presenting a statistical analysis
of capital votes in the last three years, Ashafa said, “the capital
allocation for 2012 was 31per cent; in 2013, it came down to 23.7 per
cent while in 2014, it is 23.4 per cent.”
He observed that the 2014 budget estimates negated the requirements of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
The lawmaker described the document as an illegality and called for its return to the Executive.
Section 18(2) of the Fiscal
Responsibility Act, he argued, stipulated that sectoral distribution of
the budget should be attached to the Medium Term Expenditure Framework
document.
He accused Okonjo – Iweala of deliberately making it so.
The senator further argued that since
there was not enough money for capital projects , it was impossible
for the economy to witness the kind of growth that would engender
employment creation.
Senator Bukola Saraki, while expressing
his views on the budget, lamented that the 2013 Appropriation Act was
abysmally implemented.
He insisted that the Executive should be
made to account for last year’s budget before the Senate could go into
the 2014 estimates.
But in his contribution, Ugbesia
said, “This budget proposal may not be the best and cannot satisfy
everybody but it can be seen as a working paper that will guide towards
a budget that will satisfy everybody.
“It could be used to find some solutions
to our problems. My worry is the concept of envelope that comes with it
annually. To me, it is an impediment.
“We should use the opportunity of this
budget process to redefine the role of Executive and Legislature as it
relates to designs and implementation of budgets.”
Eze also did not see anything wrong
with the document. Noting that the budget was well designed to
generate employment, he pointed out that the problem with budget in
Nigeria was never its content but its implementation.
But Senator Ita Enang shifted the blame for budget failures from the Executive to the National Assembly.
Before the commencement of the debate,
the President of the Senate, David Mark, appealed to his colleagues to
make their contributions from a nationalistic standpoint, and not from
party leanings.
“Let us look at this budget from a national perspective, rather than a political party perspective,” he said.
Meanwhile, the caucus of the APC in
the House of Representatives has restated its readiness to comply
with the party’s directive to its members to block the passage of
the 2014 budget.
It said that it would not support a
budget of N4.6tn that would merely promote the “corruption” in
governance encouraged by the ruling PDP.
The caucus, which addressed newsmen at
the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, explained that it would
achieve its plan by working with “the progressive” members of the PDP.
The Minority Leader of the House, Mr.
Femi Gbajabiamila, who spoke for the caucus, added that there was no
point passing a budget that would not improve the welfare of Nigerians.
He dismissed the speculation that the
APC could fail because its numerical strength (172) was not enough to
defeat the current working alliance between the PDP, Labour Party, Acord
Party and the All Progressives Grand Alliance members in the House.
Gbajabiamila recalled that before now,
many Exedutive bills presented to the House by the Majority Leader, Mrs.
Mulikat Adeola-Akande, had not succeeded because the APC and
progressive PDP members opposed them.
He said, “The kick against such bills
came from mostly APC members and progressive members within the rank and
file of the PDP.
“So, the directive (of the APC
leadership) was really nothing new. What it did was to put a government
determined to bring our democracy down on notice that it was no longer
going to be business as usual.”
On the budget specifically, he said,
“We will not support a budget that does nothing for the people we
represent; we will not rubber-stamp a budget that seeks to borrow more
money at ridiculous rates and further impoverish the country and its
people.”
However, to address the fears of
Nigerians that salaries of workers are tied to the budget, Gbajabiamila
said the caucus was considering the possibility of discussing with
progressive PDP lawmakers to isolate the recurrent component of the
budget and pass it.
“We will hope that our progressive
colleagues will agree to an ingenious and creative idea like we did
through the doctrine of necessity to isolate the recurrent expenditure
and perhaps for the first time pass a recurrent budget only”, he added.
The APC caucus described as “bemusing”, the alliance between PDP, APGA, AP and LP, calling on them to merge with the PDP.
He said doing so would enable Nigerians to choose between two political parties during the 2015 polls.
However, APGA reacted to the APC’s stance on Wednesday, saying that it would not oppose the passage of the budget.
