UNN NEW PRO-CHANCELLOR SETS UP SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR INDIGENT STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY

PRO-CHANCELLOR SETS UP SCHOLARSHIP FUND
FOR INDIGENT STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council the University of Nigeria (UNN), Mr.
Emmanuel Chukwuka Ukala (SAN), has set up a scholarship fund for indigent students
of the university, whose studentship would otherwise be truncated by financial
difficulties. The scheme, which is worth 2 million naira annually, would run throughout
the four-year tenure of Mr Ukala, who was appointed the Pro-Chancellor of the
University in December 2013. The Pro-Chancellor's gesture represents a significant and
compassionate gesture towards the development of the University. By establishing the
scholarship scheme, the Pro-Chancellor has demonstrated a first-hand appreciation of
the challenging financial circumstances faced by a good number of students of the
university.
In his reaction, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bartho Okolo, thanked and
praised the Pro-Chancellor for his noble and selfless contribution to the scholarship and
welfare of students of the University. He further appealed to other well-meaning
Nigerians to emulate the philanthropic gesture of Mr Ukala (SAN).
To facilitate the prompt take-off of the scheme, a six-man committee headed by the
Deputy-Vice Chancellor (academic), Professor Polycarp Chigbu, has been appointed by
the Vice-Chancellor to oversee the administration of the scholarship fund.
